Simien Mountains: Trek the Roof of Africa

The Simien Mountains National Park is not just a destination; it’s our home. A UNESCO World Heritage site, this dramatic escarpment offers some of Africa’s most spectacular scenery, with jagged mountain peaks, deep valleys, and sheer cliffs dropping up to 1,500 meters. Known as the “Roof of Africa,” it’s a world of rare wildlife, ancient cultures, and trekking routes that have been walked by our families for generations.

The Unique Wildlife of the Simiens

The park is a sanctuary for species found nowhere else on Earth.

  • The Gelada Monkey: Often called the “bleeding-heart baboon,” these unique, grass-eating primates live in large troops and are remarkably tolerant of human presence.

  • The Walia Ibex: An endangered wild goat with magnificent curved horns, clinging to the steep cliffs of the escarpment.

  • The Ethiopian Wolf: The world’s rarest canid, though more frequently spotted in the Bale Mountains.

  • Birdlife: Soar with the majestic Lammergeyer (Bearded Vulture) and spot the endemic Thick-billed Raven.

Best Time to Visit

  • Prime Trekking (Dry Season)October to March offers clear skies, sunny days, and the best visibility. Nights can be cold at high altitude.

  • Lush & Green (Wet Season)June to September transforms the mountains with wildflowers and vibrant greenery. Trails are less crowded, but afternoon showers are common.
