This 7-day combo tour takes you from the jagged cliffs of the Simien Mountains to the tranquil waters of Lake Tana. You’ll trek through one of Africa’s most spectacular national parks, camp under the stars, and paddle to ancient island monasteries. Along the way, you’ll encounter endemic wildlife, vibrant local culture, and the source of the legendary Blue Nile.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Gondar – Gateway to the Highlands
You’ll be welcomed at Gondar Airport and transferred to your hotel. In the afternoon, explore the city’s imperial past with a guided tour of the Royal Enclosure, home to 17th-century castles and palaces. Visit the beautifully painted Debre Berhan Selassie Church, then enjoy a traditional Ethiopian dinner while your guide briefs you on the days ahead.
Day 2: Into the Simien Mountains – Wildlife & Escarpments
After breakfast, drive to Simien Mountains National Park, where your trek begins. The trail from Sankaber offers stunning views of deep gorges and towering cliffs. You’ll likely spot gelada baboons, endemic to Ethiopia, grazing in large troops. Camp near the escarpment edge and enjoy dinner under a canopy of stars.
Day 3: Trek to Geech – Highland Meadows & Hidden Valleys
Today’s hike takes you deeper into the park, through alpine meadows and dramatic landscapes. You’ll pass Jinbar Falls, cross wooden bridges, and ascend to Geech Camp, where the silence is broken only by the wind and distant bird calls. Keep an eye out for Walia ibex and lammergeiers soaring overhead.
Day 4: Sunrise at Imet Gogo & Return to Gondar
Rise early for a hike to Imet Gogo, one of the park’s most breathtaking viewpoints. From the summit, you’ll see a vast amphitheater of cliffs and valleys stretching into the horizon. After descending, drive back to Gondar for a well-earned rest and a celebratory dinner.
Day 5: Scenic Drive to Bahir Dar – From Peaks to Lakes
Travel through the Amhara highlands to Bahir Dar, a lakeside city on the shores of Lake Tana. Along the way, stop at local villages and viewpoints. Arrive at your eco-lodge in time for sunset over the water, with pelicans gliding across the lake.
Day 6: Lake Tana Kayaking – Monasteries & Birdlife
Launch your kayak for a full-day paddle across Lake Tana. Visit Ura Kidane Mehret Monastery on the Zege Peninsula, then continue to Dek Island to explore Narga Selassie Monastery. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the island and spot hippos, kingfishers, and African fish eagles on your return paddle. End the day with a lakeside dinner.
Day 7: Blue Nile Falls & Departure
Drive to Tis Issat, the Blue Nile Falls, for a scenic hike and photo opportunities. Cross the historic stone bridge and enjoy a final coffee ceremony before your transfer to Bahir Dar Airport.
